The power of the circular economy should not be underestimated and The Flipflopi Project is a clear example.

This Project started in 2018 and it continues in 2022. This is not an initiative to fill newspaper headlines, but rather a reality capable of changing the future of an ecosystem and the economic reality of a population.

But let’s start at the beginning: the Flipflopi Project is an initiative that was born as a result of verifying the high levels of plastic pollution in the Lamu Archipelago, in Kenya.

The population only had one landfill and they didn’t lack the plastic waste, so it was burned, emitting toxic gases into the atmosphere, or ended up in the ocean or Lake Victoria. The big problems were, and still are, the contamination and destruction of both ecosystems, as well as the economic impact of contamination on populations that live from traditional fishing and tourism.

Most of the waste in this place was plastic: packages, fishing nets and flip-flops. It is for this reason that the initiative, which begins with a boat, received this name.

This boat was the beginning of the circular economy project in the Latam Archipelago, and two construction and tourism entrepreneurs promoted it. It is not just any boat, but a kind of sailboat that is traditionally used in this area: a dhow. This type of fishing vessel also carries goods for trade between Africa and India.

The manufacture as well as the maintenance of this type of traditional boat, is very expensive, since it requires a lot of labour, in addition to the raw material, because it is made of solid wood. For this reason, the construction of the first Flip-Flop evidenced the power of the circular economy. These two entrepreneurs made a boat in a simple way that required low maintenance, little investment and it gives a second life to plastic waste

The Circular Economy as a revulsive for the economy in Latam.

From 2018 to 2021, the Flip-Flop Project had shown that a second life for plastics was possible. It had focused on investigating microplastic, macroplastic and fibre pollution in the area. For this reason a new horizon has opened for 2022.

During 2020 and in the years thereafter, the pandemic affected one of the axes of the local economy: the tourism. For this reason, we valued the need to maintain and promote other routes and we focused on the importance of maintaining the Archipelago’s ecosystem in the medium and long term so that the area continues to be a tourist attraction, as well as a means of economic sustainability based on fishing and commercial transport.

In 2022, The FlipFlop Project has these objectives:

The setting up of a collection and reuse of waste system. Thus, they can avoid the dumping and they will have raw material coming from the plastic recycling for new economic projects. This includes the construction of a waste collection and retrieval centre.

The education of the local population in terms of circular economy. They will show them how they can prolong the life of single-use plastics, as well as the importance of recycling materials once they have become waste.

The creation of business projects based on the use of recycled plastics. Specifically, this includes the purchase of plastic shredders powered by bicycles and cutters of plastic string from PET bottles that will be delivered to the local community so that they can start their own projects.

We have to add an ambitious objective to these, something very concrete and promising to ensure a long life for the circular economy in the archipelago and to promote the local economy: training for the use of recycled plastics as raw material for boats. This will be done in a Training Center: The Heritage Boat Building Training Center. Thus, the boats will be more accessible and easy to maintain.

El poder de la economía circular.

El poder de la economía circular no debe ser subestimado y The Flipflopi Project es un claro ejemplo de esto.

Este proyecto comenzó en 2018 y continúa en 2022. No se trata de una iniciativa para llenar titulares de periódicos, sino de una realidad capaz de cambiar el futuro de un ecosistema y la realidad económica de una población.

Pero comencemos por el principio: el Proyecto Flipflopi es una iniciativa que nace a raíz de constatar los altos niveles de contaminación por plásticos en el Archipiélago de Lamu, en Kenya.

La población solamente contaba con un vertedero y los residuos plásticos carecían de gestión, por lo que eran quemados, emitiendo gases tóxicos a la atmósfera, o acababan en el océano o en el lago Victoria. Los grandes problemas eran, y siguen siendo, la contaminación y destrucción de ambos ecosistemas, así como el impacto económico de la contaminación en poblaciones que viven de la pesca tradicional y el turismo.

Los residuos de forma mayoritaria, en este lugar, eran plásticos: envases, redes de pesca y flip-flops. Es por este motivo que, la iniciativa, que comienza con un barco, recibiese este nombre.

Este barco, inicio del proyecto de economía circular en el Archipiélago de Latam, promovido por dos empresarios de la construcción y el turismo, no es un barco cualquiera, sino una especie de velero que se usa tradicionalmente en esta zona: un dhow. Este tipo de embarcación pesquera también transporta mercancías para el comercio entre África e India.

La fabricación, así como el mantenimiento de este tipo de embarcación tradicional, es muy costosa, ya que requiere mucha mano de obra, además de la propia materia prima, porque está realizado en madera maciza. Es por este motivo que la construcción del primer Flip-Flop evidenciaba el poder de la economía circular. Estos dos empresarios fabricaron un barco de forma sencilla que requería un bajo mantenimiento, poca inversión, y que a su vez da una segunda vida a los residuos plásticos.

La Economía Circular como revulsivo de la economía en Latam.

De 2018 a 2021 el Proyecto Flip-Flop había demostrado que una segunda vida para los plásticos era posible y se había centrado en la investigación de la contaminación por microplásticos, macroplásticos y fibras en la zona. Tras esto, se abrió un nuevo horizonte para el año 2022.

Durante el año 2020 y posteriores, la pandemia afectó a uno de los ejes de la economía local: el turismo. Así es como se puso en valor la necesidad de mantener y potenciar otras vías y puso el foco en la importancia del mantenimiento del ecosistema del Archipiélago a medio y largo plazo para que la zona siga siendo un reclamo turístico, así como una vía de sostenimiento económico basada en la pesca y en el transporte comercial.

En el año 2022 el Proyecto FlipFlop tiene como objetivos:

-La puesta en marcha de un sistema de recogida y reutilización de residuos. Así evitarán el vertido y contarán con materia prima procedente del reciclaje de plásticos para nuevos proyectos económicos. Esto incluye la construcción de un centro de recogida y recuperación de residuos.

-La educación de la población local en materia de economía circular. Les mostrarán cómo alargar la vida de plásticos de un solo uso, así como la importancia de reciclar los materiales una vez que se han convertido en residuos.

-La creación de proyectos empresariales basados en el uso de plásticos reciclados. En concreto esto incluye la compra de trituradoras de plásticos impulsadas por bicicletas y cortadoras de hilo plástico procedente de botellas de PET que se entregarán a la comunidad local con el fin de que puedan poner en marcha sus propios proyectos.

Un ambicioso objetivo se une a estos, algo muy concreto y prometedor tanto para asegurar una larga vida a la economía circular en el archipiélago como para promover la economía local: la formación para el uso de plásticos reciclados como materia prima de embarcaciones.  Esto lo harán en un Centro de Formación: The Heritage Boat Building Training Center. Así, además, las embarcaciones serán más accesibles y de fácil mantenimiento.
