Recycled Plastics and Building Industry

Recycled Plastics and Building Industry

Recycled Plastics represent a real revolution for the building Industry.

An estimated 1.6 billion people do not have suitable housing. In this amount are not included those people that every year lose their houses as consequence of natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires or floods.

At the same time, we are facing two problems: Oceans plastic pollution and carbon emissions produced by the building Industry, added to landscape and ecosystems destructions due to excavations.

In recent years several projects have taken off with the aim of find more and more application of recycled plastics into the building Industry.

If we think carefully, plastics can be strong, water resistant, lightweight, ductile and durable, in addition to recyclable.

Moreover, the advantages in using recycled Plastic in the building Industry are:

  • Low environmental impact
  • Lighter and thinner than conventional bricks
  • They allow to build low-cost housing (achieving a saving of around 30% compared to conventional bricks)
  • They provide an optimal acoustic insulation
  • They allow to move the building in case of natural disasters.

Follow this link https://www.recyclerebuild.org/ to know about this project and studies, trials and error involved, until hitting on the better structure. One of these projects, allows to create a solid structure simply using Plastic bricks and a hammer.

It is amazing how the form as these plastic recycled bricks are joined is similar to the LEGO pieces! In addition, this project is accessible to anyone who wants it, having acces to plastics recycled, so can he can do your own constructions.

All the downloadable instructions range from small bike storage booths to other type of constructions as mobile urinary (so useful and necessary in less-develop countries) or houses. On their Open Source-Recycled Brick site, they advertise and allow other people to publish their collaboration to develop new structures as well as share those already developed through google drive.

The winners of the United Nations Environment Program “Young Champions of the Earth” also present us their solution in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbZKP4UAtL8 Currently they apply it in Kenya but their intention is to extend it to the entire African continent.

They were seriously concerned about the amount of plastic waste around them and they have developed a system to turn it into paving stones that are used to pave the ground. However, they plan to continue developing solutions from recycled plastics for their application in construction, since their objective is to build houses too.

However, these are not the only references in the use of recycled plastics in construction: Conceptos Plásticos in Colombia, ByFusion in New Zealand or Miniwiz Sustainable Energy Ltd., as well as the Norwegian start-up Othalo are more entities that work in the same field.

This shows that plastic is not a problem, since from its recycling the path to a more sustainable way of life is built.

Here at Onlyplast we are very proud to be a part of the Circular Economy as distributors of recycled plastics to other companies around the world.
